The Original Power Suit

A blue pinstripe suit is your deal-making power suit: wear it with confidence.

As I mentioned last week, you don’t need a red tie to make a power suit. Sometimes that can be conveyed with subtlety. Sometimes you don’t even need a tie. And sometimes, the suit can say it all by itself. And that’s certainly the case with a blue pinstripe suit.

Building a smart suit wardrobe takes some thought and planning, especially if you’re just getting started. If you see five suits in your future, buy the pinstripe suit fourth or fifth, after your basic navy, grey, and subtle plaid. Even if you have a job where wearing one would be appropriate, hold off and stock up on more versatile options first.

HISTORY BUFF? Learn about the history of pinstripes.

What’s a good shirt and tie combination with a blue pinstripe suit? Like a navy suit, a blue pinstripe suit will pair well with most other colors. But because of its “businesslike” vibe, I can see how it would be hard to break away from traditional (i.e. safe) pairings.

Try experimenting with a contrast collar shirt – keeping with the business tone – and deep, rich colors for the tie, like burgundy. Don’t forget to think seasonally. In the summer, a lighter tie is more than appropriate.

What color shoes do you wear with a blue pinstripe suit? Like I mentioned with a dark navy suit – it all depends on how you style the shirt and tie combination. However, pinstripes definitely give off more of an “all business” look, so keeping it in that formal ballpark is generally the way I go.

Classic black wingtips. Very dark brown or deep burgundy cap toes. In the summer, I might go lighter with both the shirt/tie combo and shoe choice.
