Today, we’re pleased to feature Mr. Alessandro Coltro, the founder of Gents Cafe.

Embodying a blend of timeless and casual aesthetics, Alessandro has curated a style that captures the essence of simplicity and effortless elegance. In this exclusive interview, he shares insights into his style evolution, his favorite brands, and the story behind Gents Cafe. He also gives us a glimpse into his lifestyle, from his earliest memories of being into menswear to how he unwinds after a long day. Read on to learn more about Alessandro, explore his personal style, and discover his perspective on being a modern gentleman.

How would you describe your style?

My style is a blend of timeless and casual aesthetics. It’s consistently simple, leaning towards the elegance of neutral shades to achieve an effortless look. Whether I’m at work, out for a cocktail, or traveling, my wardrobe consists of clothes that I feel comfortable in — pieces that seamlessly transition across various settings and effortlessly complement one another. In essence, my aim is to cultivate a style that encapsulates both timelessness and simplicity, enabling me to stand out effortlessly in any situation while maintaining an understated allure that avoids drawing too much attention.

What’s your earliest memory of being into menswear?

I have a vivid memory captured in a film photo my dad took when I was three. It was Christmas day of 1993, and in the photograph, I was sporting a jacket, waistcoat, striped shirt, bow tie, and a charming teddy bear pin on the lapel. Even though I can’t claim a passion for menswear at such a tender age, my parents have always had an influence on me in terms of caring about dressing well as a form of good manners.

Over the years, this ethos has guided me, even as my style evolved through different phases. Post-university, I started to take my personal style more seriously and transitioned to a more ‘classic’ approach, prioritizing timeless pieces over fleeting trends, which was the beginning of Gents Cafe.

In a world that moves rapidly, I believe in the importance of embracing the art of slowing down and curating one’s journey.

Tell us a little bit more about Gents Cafe.

I launched Gents Cafe’s Instagram account in 2016 when I was still in my 20s, embarking on my style journey. Gents Cafe started as my creative outlet, a personal mood board where I aimed to visually represent my definition of being a Modern Gentleman by curating inspiring content found on social media. Over time, it has transformed into a global community, a dynamic media brand, and a creative studio.

With a community of over 55,000 people on social media and 11,000 weekly newsletter readers, Gents Cafe engages in contemporary discussions about style, culture, and life. This evolution has been made possible by collaborating with an incredible team of more than 20 contributors.

At Gents Cafe, our mission is to empower men to lead intentional lives through a combination of slow content, community experiences, and bespoke brand partnerships that initiate meaningful conversations. In a world that moves rapidly, we believe in the importance of embracing the art of slowing down and curating one’s journey.

Thanks to a community-driven platform, our goal is to inspire, connect, and guide gentlemen on a purpose-driven path where style intersects with substance, creating a positive impact.

What are some of your favorite brands?

In addition to owning select pieces from renowned brands such as Barbour and Corneliani, I like exploring and embracing niche labels that bring a unique flair to my wardrobe. Among my favorites, Scarosso stands out as my go-to for meticulously crafted shoes, combining quality with affordability, while Formula Iozzi has become a trusted choice for overshirts, effortlessly blending style and functionality. When it comes to shirts, Berkeley consistently delivers in terms of quality and design. Adding a touch of sophistication to my wrist, I appreciate the understated elegance of watches from the brand UNIMATIC. These carefully curated selections not only reflect my discerning taste but also contribute to the distinct character of my personal style.

Most recent menswear (or accessory) purchase?

My latest addition is a jacket from Barbour International, part of “The Steve McQueen Collection”.

Favorite piece in your closet?

A navy blue turtle-neck cashmere sweater. Not only is it incredibly soft, providing a delightful wearing experience, but its versatility allows me to effortlessly incorporate it into various outfits.

Most-worn item in your closet?

A pair of selvage blue jeans. My love for denim stems from its remarkable versatility – whether paired with loafers for a polished look or sneakers for a more relaxed vibe.

How has your style changed over time?

In my early 20s, I found myself drawn to “famous brands,” prioritizing fashion trends over timeless style. As time passed, a shift occurred – I began prioritizing quality over the allure of logos. The concept of style transformed for me, evolving into an extension of my personality rather than a conformity to trends. The journey of personal style is an ongoing exploration that matures over time. It’s a transformative process, never fully concluded, as style continually adapts and reshapes itself. Now, I believe I have discerned and articulated the fundamental elements that shape my distinct and evolving style.

Tell us about what you’re wearing here.

I’ve seamlessly blended timeless classics with unique pieces that speak to my personal style and deep appreciation for quality craftsmanship. During my time at the Pitti Uomo trade show in Florence, comfort and functionality took center stage. As usual, my outfit serves as an expression of admiration for “Made in Italy”, timeless aesthetics, and the meaningful narratives behind each item.

Sunglasses: I’m sporting the iconic Ray Ban Wayfarer, a timeless classic that never goes out of style.

Shoes: Scarosso Chelsea Boots. Handcrafted in Italy made out of cigar suede and partially treated with wax for a special finish.

Shirt: A denim shirt from the Italian brand Formula Iozzi, recently becoming one of my favorite items—a perfect blend of comfort and style.

Pants and sweater: Both items hail from the Italian brand lirecento, embodying the essence of Made in Italy with a commitment to quality and style.

Watch: A limited edition UNIMATIC timepiece, a collaboration with Royal Enfield in celebration of their 122-year anniversary. This watch holds a special significance for me beyond its stylish design. It’s not available anymore so your best bet is to check eBay or Chrono24.

Coat: Completing the look is a navy double-breasted wool coat, a wardrobe staple that seamlessly transitions from formal to casual settings. Its versatility allows me to effortlessly pair it with a suit or create a more relaxed look.

Do you have a “style icon”?

Certainly, I admire the impeccable style of icons such as Steve McQueen, Paul Newman, and Cary Grant. However, thanks to Gents Cafe, I consider myself fortunate to continually encounter classy individuals who serve as a constant inspiration in terms of their style choices. Beyond that, I find great inspiration from the people within my close circle of friends. Their exceptional sense of style serves as yet another valuable source of influence for me.

Favorite book?

The Almanack of Naval Ravikant. This book compiles the valuable lessons of Naval Ravikant, who teaches people how to build wealth and achieve long-term happiness by working on a few essential skills, all while discovering the secrets of living a good life.

Favorite movie?

I will pick two: “The Talented Mr. Ripley”: it’s the ideal blend of style, the allure of the Italian lifestyle, and a gripping thriller that compels you to stay engaged throughout. Another film is “Ocean’s 11”: the synergy of each team member contributing their unique skills to achieve a common goal creates a perfect collaborative environment, making it a compelling and fun watch. Both films have earned a place in my repeat-watch list, and I find myself revisiting them multiple times.

After a long day, how do you unwind?

After a long day, I unwind by immersing myself in my passion for sports—it’s a cornerstone of my well-being, enhancing my mood, productivity, and overall happiness. Six years ago, I delved into the world of CrossFit, and it has since become my go-to method for unwinding at the end of the day, allowing me to release energy and rejuvenate both mind and body.
