Light Layers: The Half Zip Sweater

Men have no shortage of options when it comes to choosing a sweater. The V-neck, crewneck, cardigan, and turtleneck are four staple sweaters that every guy should have in his wardrobe. The half zip sweater, on the other hand, is one that we frequently see in stores and online, always seems like a good idea to purchase, but can admittedly be somewhat puzzling to style. Now that sweater weather is in full swing, here’s a look that offers some inspiration on how to wear a half zip sweater this fall.

With a V-neck, crewneck, cardigan, or turtleneck sweater, it’s fairly cut and dry in terms of knowing how to dress it up or dress it down. Though a half zip sweater is slightly more casual and sporty, it can also work as part of a more dressed up look.

Half zip sweaters are usually fairly thin, which makes them ideal layering pieces. Wear it as an outer layer over a button up shirt with or without a tie or throw on a blazer if it’s a little cooler outside.

Isn’t this considered a quarter zip?

Ha. Seems like different retailers might call it different names. It’s a half-zip according to J.Crew.

Would you go one size up on the sweater so when layering it doesn’t fit too tight?

Personally, I don’t like my sweaters to be too bulky and I actually had my tailor take this one in on the sides. A sweater will generally stretch out so I would recommend going with one that’s perhaps a little more fitted. That’s just my taste. Thanks for reading, Joey.

A half (or quarter) zip sweater is great for framing the face. Thanks so much for reading and have a great weekend.

I see a lot of stores carry the half zip w/ buttons on it. What do you think of this? I have a few, but have been told by a few that it’s “silly”.

    • http://hespokestyle.com Brian Sacawa

Though I don’t own any myself, I’m a fan of the buttons. If you like wearing them, don’t worry about what others say. Wear what you love. Thanks for reading, Kevin.

Thanks for the reply Brian. I should have worded that differently, I actually meant the half zips that have both a zipper AND buttons. Is it too much?

        • http://hespokestyle.com Brian Sacawa

Not sure I’ve ever seen those.

I’m actually wearing one now, as an example. Have a date tonight so debating whether to keep it on or throw on a regular vneck sweater.

Ah, that’s interesting. The buttons hide the zipper. I’m always a v-neck fan, but it definitely comes down to your personal preference.

I’m going out for New Year’s eve tomorrow for the first time with my fiancĂ© of for years. I want to look right. I was thinking white collar button up with light blue or red half zip sweater over it any suggestions ?Jeans okay should I stick to slacks. I used to think I knew what I was doing LOL

My advice is coming a little late, but what you describe, I’d stick with jeans if the occasion is casual enough. Hope you had a great celebration!

Stuck with the jeans, had a blast . Looked like I belonged next her , haha thanks you too
