How to wear a tartan plaid shirt
In partnership with Mizzen+Main.
It’s that time of the year–holiday party time! There are, of course, many different kinds of holiday parties as well as many corresponding ways to dress for each of them. Today we’re focusing on a casual holiday get-together with friends and featuring a no-nonsense, ruggedly stylish look featuring one of the season’s staples–the tartan plaid shirt.
The holidays are a time for nostalgia and, for me, no article of clothing hits that note more than a blue/green tartan (or black watch plaid) shirt. I have fond childhood Christmastime memories of sitting in our family room, fireplace blazing, and watching old movies with my father in his favorite black watch plaid flannel shirt. Isn’t it interesting how clothing can evoke those types of memories?
To be honest, although I love the cold weather and the thought of flannel, my body tends to run very, very hot. And flannel–at least when worn up top–is generally a one-way ticket to sweating profusely, which completely counteracts the fabric’s comfort factor.
DON’T MISS: More ways to wear black watch plaid this season.
Lucky for me, the shirt I’m wearing from Mizzen+Main is made so I don’t have that issue. It’s a a zero-cotton fabric–98% polyester and 2% spandex, to be exact–with a few performance properties that seem tailor made for me (and you too if you can relate). The fabric is breathable and moisture-wicking. It also has a two-way stretch, is machine washable and wrinkle resistant, but I want to focus on the warmth factor.
I’ve been wearing this shirt a lot recently. As I’ve been making a conscious effort to develop the casual side of my style, I’ve been looking for the right pieces to add to the permanent collection. And this shirt is definitely one of them. I haven’t experienced any of the sweaty drawbacks of a tradition flannel shirt–and that’s even wearing this in front of an open fireplace with a raging fire.
I know what you might be thinking: wait, this is a polyester shirt, right? Yes, but it sure doesn’t feel like one or wear like one. In terms of how it feels, the fabric is brushed so it has a super soft feel. I’ve even handled this shirt next to a real flannel and I have to say that it has an extremely similar hand-feel.
