Quick check on the elements of fall style. Color. Sweaters. Layering. Scarves. Patterns. Outerwear. Boots. Do you need to incorporate these elements in order to have great fall style? Not necessarily. I’m on record saying that I find a lot of inspiration from women’s fashion. And Bill Cunningham’s most recent On the Street video got me thinking: why not catch fall off guard with an outfit of blacks and grays?

The temptation in menswear to do too much all at once is real. Too much color, too many details. Just basically going overboard. I heard a great anecdote not too long ago related to the fashion industry. It went, if you’re going to meet with someone in fashion, don’t wear your most “fashionable” outfit. Wear black. A little insider-y, but applicable nonetheless for anybody interested in menswear in style. The message is this: you can never go wrong with simple and basic. Even when it comes to color.

Blacks and grays aren’t standard fall colors, but they’re unexpected, always look chic, never go out of style, and are easy to put together. It’s one range of colors where it doesn’t matter if the shades are a little off from each other. In fact, that just adds interest to the outfit.

Another trick for adding depth to a black/grey ensemble is to work in some texture. I love the removable quilted vest inside of this Burberry Brit coat.

Can you wear browns with black? Of course. A dark brown belt and double monks add a nice seasonal accent to a relatively monochromatic look.
