I’m often accused of having “boring style.”

I’m often accused of having “boring style.” But I think what people actually mean when they say that is basically that my style is simple.

Suit and tie. Sport coat and trousers. Loafers or lace up’s. A simple pocket square. That’s me. And if that’s quote unquote “boring,” well, that’s fine because there are three incredible benefits to dressing that way.

The first is that it will always look good. A “boring style” wardrobe consists of classics — those timeless menswear pieces that always have been and always will be in style.

Second, a simple and classic wardrobe makes it really easy to get dressed.Everything is versatile, it can pretty much all be paired together, which means it doesn’t require much thought. Think about what you could do with all that extra brain space.

And third, when you curate a classic menswear wardrobe, it’s pretty much definitive. So if you buy once and buy well, you’re set for a long time, which makes a lot of financial sense.

Before I get into this post, let me just state one thing for the record: there really is no substitute for a classic navy blazer when it comes to a well-rounded traditional menswear wardrobe. And I’ll go one step further and also state for the record — for those overly concerned with semantics — that I know there is a difference between a blazer and a sport coat. A lot of folks use the terms interchangeably and rather than than talk down and be snobbish, I prefer to meet people where they are — there are other places on the menswear internet to get your fill of snobbery. That’s just not what we do at He Spoke Style.

But back to the first point.

Although technically there is no such thing as a classic navy blazer substitute, when it comes to spring and summer, it’s nice to have an alternative that is perhaps just a bit more complementary to the season. The spring and summer color palate tends to lean a little lighter and brighter and if, like me, you like to keep things classic, choosing a lighter and brighter sport coat is a great way to go.

The question was: is a monogram on a dress shirt in a business context too much?

So, I would say definitely not, but I do have a preference on where the monogram should be.

I’m someone who, when it comes to style, really views subtlety as a virtue. I don’t like to show off. I don’t like flashy things. I’ve always said that the best details are the ones you don’t necessarily see.

So, in terms of a monogram on a dress shirt, what I see a lot of guys do is to put it on the cuff, and to me that’s just a little too show-offy.

Personally, I always get my shirts monogrammed on the left stomach and usually in a thread that’s a similar color to the shirt itself so it’s not super obvious.

But that’s me, that’s my personality, and ultimately what matters most to looking and feeling your best is that you make choices that are true to who you are.
