Transition Essentials: The Rugby Shirt

A rugby shirt is a great piece to start working into your wardrobe as summer begins to change to fall. It’s perfect on its own and also serves as a great layering piece, worn over another shirt, or under a jacket or blazer. And though I’m all for dapper travel, I’m never opposed to just keeping it simple and comfortable. Here’s an easy look that’s perfect for a casual late-summer weekend getaway.

During my years as an elite amateur cyclist, I was fortunate to ride for teams with amazing and generous sponsors. The last team I rode for had a major hookup from the Colorado brand Topo Designs, and the cordura duffel they outfitted us with remains my favorite casual carry-all. The bag has literally been all over the country with me and my bike and has withstood a lot. And the small amount of chain grease it has picked up just adds a bit of character and reminds me of all the amazing times I had racing my bike.

A rugby shirt is a statement piece.

It’s good to remember that, by nature, a rugby shirt is bold. Consider it a statement piece even if it doesn’t approach the level of statement made by some other items. Definitely respect that and allow the garment to stand out and be the focal point of any outfit. Pairing it with items that are less busy or just subtly textured is always a good choice.
