Double Up: Layered Topcoats

When I went to Milan last fall, I definitely had an agenda and a very specific list of things I’d hoped to acquire. A few shirts from Al Bazar, Cuban cigars, and a topcoat. Having checked off the first two items fairly quickly, I set about looking for my topcoat. Like many who travel to foreign soil, I was searching for something special and unique that you likely wouldn’t see the Average Joe (or even studied aficionado) sporting in the States. Call it a bit of a grown-up menswear hipster complex, if you will.

My search ultimately led me to the Brera district, not far from the apartment I was staying at, and a small boutique for the brand Montezemolo. I was drawn to several coats in the store – all very classic, a bit sporty, and cut perfectly for my physique. (For reference, I’m 5’9″, 143lbs, and a 36″ chest.) After narrowing it down to two options, and as a classic Libra, not being able to make a decision, the kind and patient store employee suggested I get both since they could be worn separately or layered together. Brilliant. And he was nice enough to give me a discount on the pair.

You’ve seen both topcoats on the site over the past couple of months – plaid here and here, quilted here, here, and here – but this is the first time I’ve layered them up. They’re both thin enough on their own that they’re not bulky when worn together. I also love the depth the combination adds, not to mention the added warmth.
