Seasonal Statement

Whenever you consider adding something to your wardrobe, it’s always important to ask yourself: how many different ways can I wear this? That’s an easy question to answer when you’re talking about the basics, but one that’s worth considering even with more of a statement piece, like a colorful blazer, for example. Easy to style as part of a dapper ensemble, but where do you take it from there?

It’s easy for a bolder piece to fall into a one-hit-wonder status. Once you figure out one way to wear it, it can be difficult to then recast it in another context. I know there’s a level of personal comfort that causes some to stay away from something that makes more of a statement, be it with a bold color or pattern, but I imagine there may also be a reluctance to spend hard-earned cash on something that may not see the light of day other than that one time, that one way. A completely valid, and prudent, concern.

If you’re planning to—or just thinking about, at the moment—wading into bolder waters, remember that the easiest way style a piece like this is to keep the rest of your outfit simple. Statement Piece 101. Use your basics as the foundation—white shirt, navy chinos—to allow the bolder item to stand out. In the case of this particular blazer, yes, it does have a bit of a shelf life as a seasonal piece, but that doesn’t mean it can’t work hard all spring (and summer).
