There’s nothing more basic or essential to a man’s wardrobe than a great pair of jeans. What is the most essential pair you could have? Easy: slim dark denim. Dress them up, dress them down. They look great either way and even better when they’ve been worn in. I’ve had my A.P.C.s for five years now and they’re just finally coming into their own. But once you’ve checked that box, what’s next? While I love my white and black denim, the other essential pair of jeans a man should own is a well-fitted pair of faded denim. Here’s why.

Faded - He Spoke Style

Think about faded denim as the warm-weather equivalent of your perfect pair of slim dark denim. Spring is always a time for lighter and brighter and jeans are no exception. You can easily wear them casually with a sweatshirt and killer pair of white kicks, or throw on a sport shirt and navy blazer for an easy casual Friday outfit.

As with any pair of jeans, keep them slim—but not tight—and tapered. If you’re a fan of thrifting, this is a great opportunity to find an amazingly worn in pair. If the fit isn’t perfect, bring them to your tailor. My tailor actually got his start in the business altering his own jeans when he was in high school!

Personally, I’ve never had much luck at thrift stores. At 5′ 9″, 140lbs, and 36″ chest, it’s usually fairly slim pickings. But fortunately I’ve found a few brands that fit me extremely well. If you’re a similar build, my pick—and what I’m wearing—is the J.Crew 484 fit.
