Don’t Forget About That Gingham Shirt

Casual sophistication with a classic blue gingham shirt

Getting back to the basics was one of my New Year’s style resolutions. It was a conscious decision and given the mayhem that was on display recently at Pitti, I am clearly in the minority and not on trend.

Style isn’t necessarily about standing out – especially if you’re standing out for the wrong reasons. These days, you’re actually more apt to stand out if you stick to the classics. And there’s nothing more classic when it comes to casual summer style than a good old blue gingham shirt.

Though nowadays we call any checked pattern gingham, it was originally striped. And while most gingham shirts are printed, they used to be dyed before weaving. At any rate, a classic blue gingham shirt is an easy way to add a little casual sophistication to a casual outfit.

A simple outfit is the perfect canvas for a few key accessories. Add a couple beaded bracelets on one wrist and replace a watch with a cuff on the other. If you’re dressed casually, you don’t necessarily need to know the time.
