Everyday Dapper: Double-Breasted Blazer

I’ll say it again: 2015 is going to be the year that the double-breasted blazer breaks into the mainstream. Though they’ve been a staple of menswear aficionados “in the know” for quite some time now, slimmer cuts and better tailoring are helping to change the view of the double-breasted blazer as an item that “I can’t pull off” into a viable option for any guy looking to step up his style.

Double-breasted blazers have also long been viewed as a more formal jacket option. While I think they look fantastic in that setting, it’s a very limiting approach to the garment. Lose the tie and wear it just like you would a single-breasted blazer and you’ve got a look that shows off your sartorial cojones.

One of the best things about menswear? You can do a lot with a little, especially when it comes to colors. Blue, grey, and white is a fail-safe color palate. Throw in a subtle plaid, an accent of color with your pocket square, and a killer pair of shoes, and you’re ready to go at the office, around town, or out on a date.

I really like it! I was always put off by the wider style of the double-breasted jacket so this slimmer cut is a great change. You are right too, a decent pair of shoes is a must (isn’t it always?)

Indeed! It’s great to see more DB jackets in slimmer cuts these days.

Looks like the Soho from Suitsupply? Have a very similar (if not same) db jacket from them. Really wish the Suitsupply Outlet store would open back up to the USA.

I believe that’s the Madison. The main difference is wider lapels and patch pockets.

        Yes, it’s the Madison fit.

Can you wear black shoes with the outfit in the picture? I feel like I see less and less of black shoes?

Glad to hear DB’s are back. Question – have have 80’s Canali + Sanremo DB’s that are 6 button but only 1 that buttons. Any issue vs the contemporary where button 2 button?

    • http://hespokestyle.com/ Brian Sacawa

Dan, you should only be buttoning the one button anyhow. Never button the lower button on a DB blazer. The only extra button you should use is the inner one. Buttoning this one helps keep the right side of the blazer in place. Cheers!

Theres only 1 (not including the inside button) that can be buttoned. I believe they’re called 4×1 jackets popular in mid 80’s. Thanks for your input.

No problem. Thanks for the comment!
