Ultimate High/Low: Wearing a T-Shirt With a Suit

July 11th, 2016

Can you wear a suit with a t-shirt and not look like Miami Vice-era Don Johnson?

The summer heat is here. And that poses any number of challenges when it comes to deciding what to wear if your destination isn’t the pool. For the dapper-inclined, there’s always a waistcoat. And, of course, you can always stay cooler in a cotton suit, which I can always get behind.

Wearing a long sleeve button-up under that cotton suit, however, is another story. As a result, I’ve really been embracing the extreme high/low combination of a suit and t-shirt or henley.

It’s cool, casual and – I’m gonna say it – sexy.

Here are a few tips for pulling it off.

A basic white t-shirt is the simplest and most classically stylish choice. Patterned shirts can get a little too busy and scream out that you’re trying too hard.

If you’re going to attempt the t-shirt with a suit look, always go with a v-neck. This look is all about being casual and a crew neck t-shirt will appear a little too “buttoned up.” Give your v-neck a gentle tug to loosen it up a little more for an edgier feel.

To tuck or not to tuck? Personally, I like to tuck. I’ve tried it untucked before, but I always feel it looks too sloppy and feels indecisive.

Finally, since the look is all about being casual, don’t even think of wearing socks with your loafers.
