And our recommendations for the best zinc oxide sunscreens
When choosing a sunscreen – especially a sunscreen for your face – it’s important to look for a product that uses a majority of the physical sunscreen zinc oxide as its active ingredient. Why zinc oxide? Well, it’s the safest and most effective physical sunscreen. Also, zinc oxide is the least irritating to my skin and doesn’t cause my acne-prone skin to breakout.
Another benefit of zinc oxide for oilier skin, which most men tend to have, is that it leaves the skin looking less shiny and more matte. Lastly, since zinc oxide is used often to calm the skin (it’s actually used in diaper rash cream), it will help to soothe any sensitivity caused from shaving.
Since zinc oxide can be more opaque and heavier than other sunscreens, I am always on the lookout for one that provides adequate protection without leaving white residue all over my face. Usually, this means using products that are mostly zinc oxide but supplemented with smaller amounts of chemical sunscreens. This makes them more lightweight and transparent.
