Navy is something that I have a lot of in my closet. It’s one of menswear’s most versatile colors, working well for any season and for any situation. Plus, navy is one of those colors that simply looks great on every guy. While we usually use navy as the foundation for a look—think about all the possibilities a navy suit offers—going monochromatic is an option that shouldn’t be overlooked. Here’s an all navy look that’s perfect for winter.

There are a couple ways you can create depth and interest with an all navy, or any monochromatic look. First, if you choose pieces in a solid color, this is your opportunity to play with variations in texture. Pairing items in this manner screams subtlety and sophistication. It’s also fairly intense and would definitely be more appropriate for making a statement during a night out on the town than the day to day at the office.

A second approach—and one that I’ve been particularly fond of lately—is to play around with mixing patterns. Stripes and checks might seem like the style equivalent of oil and water, but when they’re held together by the same basic color, they can work just fine together. As always, experiment with what you have in your closet. You may be surprised with what works once you start exploring the possibilities.
