Double Down: Creative Sweater Layering

November 17th, 2014

Greetings from Texas, everyone. Rob and I have been traveling for nearly a month now and we are looking forward to finally heading home at the end of this week. I know we’re in the midst of fall, but it’s been feeling a lot like winter, even down here in the south. It was 36 degrees a couple days ago when we were in San Antonio! Crazy weather, but at least the transition heading back east won’t be quite as jarring. As it’s started to cool down, it’s time to start thinking about layering a little differently. Here’s a creative approach to layering with multiple sweaters.

If you’re going to layer sweaters, make sure they’re thin. Extra fine merino or lambswool will allow you keep the bulk down and layer them under your favorite fall blazer. A basic rule of layering is that colors go light to dark, or dark to light.

A thin turtleneck is the often overlooked and unsung hero of the sweater world. You don’t see them all the time, but I’d like the turtleneck make a bigger comeback. It’s a great cold weather “base layer” since it keeps you insulated and keeps the wind off your neck. A winter alternative to a t-shirt. As always, neutrals will give you the most styling options throughout your wardrobe – gray, navy, tan, and black. I picked up a few recently.

Devoted HSS readers know I’m a big fan of waistcoats. A thin, lightly textured cardigan is a softer and slightly warmer alternative. It makes a great line against the turtleneck and frames the face nicely.
