2014 Year in Review

January 2nd, 2015
2

2014 was a very big year for HSS. Readership grew immensely, with site traffic tripling since last year. We introduced a newsletter and new video series, collaborated with many, many amazing brands, traveled a ton, and took on some larger scale styling and editorial projects that couldn’t have been more rewarding.

As I reflect on the year that was, I’m reminded of how lucky I am to be able to communicate with you all on a regular basis. I’m grateful to all my readers and eternally thankful for the team that I have behind me. First and foremost, Rob McIver. It’s fair to say that without Rob there would be no HSS. His artistry, unwavering dedication, and friendship have meant the world to me. My manager Vanessa Flaherty, Laura Minch, and the entire team at DBA. These ladies get it done. Jared Morgan for his outstanding video work and getting us set up for the Ask HSS series. Adrian Hernandez for his amazing music. And, of course, my family for always supporting me, especially when times are tough.

What’s coming up in 2015?

Getting back to basics. Looking back at 2014’s most popular posts, it’s clear to me that basic, useful content is what you guys are looking for. Personal style posts will still remain the cornerstone of HSS, but among the inspiration, be on the lookout for more information in the form of guides, tutorials, and straight up useful content.

Expanded video content. The popularity of the 10 Essential Ties video as well as the Ask HSS video series have convinced me that making video content is time well spent. In addition to high quality “guides” like the 10 ties video, we’ll also be producing a series of menswear and cocktail making tutorials and short and sweet product reviews. I’ve been discussing bringing a whiskey-fiend friend of mine on board for a “tasting room” series as well. All of this has been in the works for months, so we’re looking forward to executing this year.

Site redesign. Though I’m not unhappy with our current design, there are some aspects of the site that need improvement, like load time. Also in development are improvements to the Style Guide that will make it more easily searchable and shoppable, a better mobile experience, and updates to the app.

Growing the team. As HSS has grown, so have the responsibilities I’ve had to shoulder to keep it running the way it should. As a result, I’ve been stretched very thin the last couple months and unable to focus on the big picture creative direction as much as I’ve wanted. I’ll be looking to add one or two individuals to the HSS team to handle things related to affiliate marketing, aspects of social media, and newsletter support. Please get in touch if you’re interested.

What would you like to see more (or less) of in 2015?

Thanks, as always, for reading. 2015 is going to be a great year.

Stylishly Yours,

Brian
