Even on my quick walk to the coffee shop this morning, I could tell that winter was in the air. And as the temperatures plunge, it’s a good time to start thinking about bulking up your outerwear game with some serious insulation. Nothing beats a puffer jacket when it comes to warmth and casual style.
A puffer jacket is a good option if you’re looking for something more casual than an overcoat. Additionally, its cropped cut allows for greater mobility than you’ll find with a three-quarters or full-length topcoat.
When shopping for one, it’s important to understand that not all fillings are created equal. Goose down – like the filling in my Duvetica jacket – is the gold standard. Synthetic fillings might make the garment cheaper, but that’s just it – they make it cheaper, and not necessarily in just the price sense.
If you opt for genuine goose down, be sure your jacket’s shell is water repellant, as goose down doesn’t do so well when it gets wet.
One word of caution: a puffer jacket has an overstuffed and oversized silhouette. This doesn’t make it the best coat option for larger guys since it adds bulk to your frame. However, if you’ve got a slimmer build, it can add a nice amount of bulk.
Thanks for reading and stay warm out there!
