Autumn Essential: The Plaid Blazer

One of my favorite things about menswear are the options available when it comes to tailoring your style to the season. Fabrics, patterns and colors are all elements that can help define a look as spring, summer, fall or winter.

Fall is all about breaking out richer fabrics and patterns. Here’s a sharp casual look with one of my seasonal go-to garments, a wool cashmere plaid blazer.

A plaid blazer is sporty but can also work at the office. That kind of versatility makes it perfect for a Friday you might have a date or happy hour drinks planned. Lose the tie, unbutton the shirt and you’re good to go – casually dressed up.

How a blazer is constructed factors in to how casual it will appear. A half-lined blazer will have a more relaxed drape, while a soft shoulder will make it appear much less formal as well (not to mention more Italian).

You mention wearing this brown blazer for a night out or date, but personally, for some reason, I can’t bring myself to wear brown or any other earthy colors at night.
I love earthy colors, browns, tans, olives, etc and “trad” or “preppy” details or fabrics like button down collars, elbow patches, corduroy or tweed but when I’m going for a night out I feel awkward in them and prefer grey, black, navy or red in sleek and minimalist cuts and fabrics.
Is this just me? Am I weird?

You look wonderful, as usual! My cousin (two or three times removed, I can’t quite work it out!) was the late Sir Hardy Amies ( and this post reminds me of one his most famous quotes. ““A man should look as if he’s bought his clothes with intelligence, put them on with care and then forgotten all about them”.I think you’ve nailed this idea, Brian!

Brown looks really sharp on you, especially with your features. I love earth tones but I’d have to agree with MNuta on wearing brown on a date least not a tweed blazer. Then again, style is opinion and personal. Really love this look though, great work Brian!
