Guest Dress: Late Summer Wedding

When a suit is too formal, turn to a strong blazer and trousers combo

Robin and I will be attending a couple late summer weddings, which naturally raises the question: how does one dress for a late summer wedding? And, you know? That’s not a bad question.A summer wedding is the perfect time for a seersucker suit, but with the season starting wane, it’s likely going to seem a little out of place. We’re talking a late summer wedding here. It still going to feel mostly like summer though perhaps maybe not.

However it feels, what you wear should reflect that almost in-between seasonal state. Here’s one outfit idea.

Let’s start here: should you wear a suit? My advice is to dispense with the suit for a good blazer and trousers combination. Why? Summer weddings – even late summer weddings – always feel a little more casual and relaxed. And, in my opinion, a suit is too formal.

Because most late summer weddings – actually, most weddings, I suppose – will start in the late afternoon and go into the evening, your blazer should be one that will make that day/night transition.

Something navy is simple and classic. Find one with an interesting weave to capture some of the summer spirit.

Like seersucker, a linen trouser, may just be a touch too casual. It also won’t transition well from day to night. A wool cream trouser, on the other hand, is much more appropriate in the evening. And a cuff adds the right amount of formality.
