Summer Wedding Style Tips

During the summer wedding season, I get lots of questions of the “What should I wear?” variety. What’s appropriate? What colors? What kind of neckwear? And so on.I’ve written before about how to dress for a summer wedding in the city, country, or garden, but here are a few general tips and guidelines for looking your best when you’re attending someone’s special day.

Keep your colors and fabrics light. Be sure to stay seasonal. Summer means lighter colors. Think white, pinks and peaches, and light browns and blues. And more practically, summer means lighter fabrics. You don’t want to be sweating it out in a heavy wool number. It’s the perfect time to break out that linen or seersucker suit.

Go with the bow. I love the idea of wearing a bow tie to a summer wedding. It’s fun and a little different without being over the top (see below). Plus, as I mentioned in the 10 essential ties video, nothing looks cooler than when you untie it at the end of the night.

Don’t upstage the groom/wedding party. If you’re a wedding attendee, you want to look good, but you definitely don’t want to be the focal point of the evening. It’s someone else’s special day, after all! Keep it subtle and avoid choosing accessories that are loud, flamboyant, or that generally call attention to themselves and scream, “Hey, look at me!” It’s a good way to be any day of the week, but even more important in a setting such as this.
