How To Level Up Your Casual Winter Style

5 considerations from the coat to watch to luxury sneakers

In partnership with M. Gemi.

Casual outfits are an interesting breed. In one sense, they’re very easy to put together. Jeans, sweater, sneakers, done. However, it takes a little bit of thought (and just a touch of creativity) to elevate a simple casual look. Today, I’m sharing a five tips on how to do just that.

1. The badass coat. One of the most important pieces of any winter (or cold weather) look is your jacket. Find something that’s simple and timeless, like a trucker jacket, but one that also has some more interesting and/or luxe details, such as one in suede with a shearling collar.

2. Supplement with a scarf. Scarves serve two purposes. First, and most practically, they’re meant to keep you warm. Second, they’re an aesthetic addition. They can be both of those things or just one of them. In the case of the scarf I’m wearing here, it’s more of the latter. A short scarf with a little pattern is a great way to focus some attention on an outfit that consists entirely of solid colors.

3. Try a turtleneck. I hear guys say all the time that they can’t pull off a turtleneck. That probably has something to do with the “stuffy” baggage that often accompanies a turtleneck. However, I think we’ve finally reached a point that we can move past that characterization. Simply put, a turtleneck is one of the easiest ways to add some sophistication to a casual outfit.

4. Watch game. Forget flash. Instead choose a watch that is understated in appearance but that has a major pedigree, an interesting heritage or story, a special meaning to you, or all of the above. I much prefer a watch that only a small group of people will really “understand” and know about than something that screams, “Look at me!”

5. Luxury sneakers.

A key component to my casual winter style (and my casual style, in general). It’s worth investing a pair that is handsome and that will last. A couple things to keep in mind when it comes to sneakers: not all sneakers are created equal, and it is possible to get an extremely high-quality luxury sneaker at a more-or-less lower-than-luxury price point.

M.Gemi sneakers check both of those boxes. From a construction standpoint, they’re made with a soft calfskin leather, which means there is a minimal break-in period. Unlike many other sneakers, M.Gemi’s Margom soles are sewn on by hand. And they’re made by craftsmen in Tuscany who have been working with fine leathers for over 60 years.

The Lucente that I’m wearing is a classic, understated minimalist design, which makes it extremely versatile. I’ve been very impressed with the quality and am looking forward to seeing them acquire some more character as they continue to wear in. And at a price point of $228, it’s nearly half the cost of similarly-marketed sneakers. Oh, and shipping and returns are always free.

Our friends at M.Gemi are actually offering HSS readers $40 off their first order (all styles included, except those already discounted). All you need to do is use code HESPOKE40. This code will be live through February 28, 2019. Click here to shop all M.Gemi shoes.
