Cool Yule: Holiday Party Style with an Edge

Holiday party style can often be extremely predictable. Take a look around any holiday gathering, whether an office function or family affair, and you’re likely to see red sweaters, green sweaters, ugly sweaters, and all manner of novelty ties and socks. Sartorial hallmarks of the season as unavoidable as It’s a Wonderful Life and that damn Paul McCartney Christmas song. However, unlike holiday music and movies, you can avoid the same old same old holiday party style. Here’s a different kind of approach.

There’s no rule that says dressing for a holiday party has to be any different than dressing up for any event. Dispense with the cliche of building your outfit around a brightly colored sweater in favor of a sleek and edgy all-black ensemble.

I always say that some of the best details are the ones that aren’t immediately obvious, or necessarily seen at all. For example, the leather accents on this blazer’s collar and on the underside of the lapel adds just a touch of edginess. And the striped red sleeve lining is a subtle (though hidden) festive nod.

Remember that black denim is your go-to “in-between” dress pant. Great for the office Christmas party, a festive night out at the bar with friends, or a pre-holiday date.

Raise your hand if you'd like some warmer weather right now. I realize it's December and the polar vortex is bearing down on us (well, it was!), but not everyone is sharing our seasonal temperature misfortune. Take reader Eric, for example, who lives in Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula and is in need of some advice for looking dapper in a hotter climate. So, here you go, Eric! Those of us in the deep freeze right now will be envying you from afar.

I love hearing from readers, wherever they are! If you have a question, leave it in the comments, send it via email, or get in touch via Twitter or Instagram with the hashtag #AskHSS. And be sure to subscribe to the YouTube channel to be the first to see new videos.
