Ooh, Fancy: Welcome To Formalwear Month on HSS!

It’s going to be a black tie affair…

Dressing formally is the kind of thing that’s really fun to daydream about – how sweet would it be to wear a tuxedo or off-white dinner jacket to some event? – but when the opportunity to actually wear formalwear arises, it always seems like, oh crap, I thought a lot about this but I don’t actually 1) know what to do or 2) have anything that would be acceptable for that dress code. Because, really, how often do you get a black tie invitation?

That’s why we’re declaring March “Formalwear Month” here at HSS.

shawl lapel guide

Throughout the month of March, we’re going to be breaking down as many aspects of formalwear as we can, showing you some classic ways to approach formal dressing (as well as some creative ones), while giving you the tools and knowledge you need to do formalwear with confidence and style.

Full disclosure: it’s going to be about a week before you see any formalwear content on the site. Two reasons. First, we want to make sure to take your requests and suggestions into consideration. And, second, we’ve been really busy planning some exciting things for the fall.

So, now is the time to let us know: what formalwear coverage would you like to see from us this month? What are your burning questions? What do you need clarified? Chime in below!

Thanks for reading.

    Hey Brian,

I would like to see a formal outfit for the opera since I am quite often there. We have a new and amazing opera house in town. It is the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg. Check it out ;)

    Greetings from Germany, Jonas

Hi, Jonas. Thanks for the suggestion. We’ve actually covered how to dress for the symphony previously: http://hespokestyle.com/mens-style-advice/what-to-wear-to-a-concert/

You should check that out, as you might be surprised about my take on it!

Nice article. I didn’t know that you already wrote something about the topic. Thanks for answering. Keep up the good work!

    Hey Brian,

I’d say when to wear a winged collar and when to wear a three-piece tux.

      Good question. Noted.

    Hey Brian,
Could you cover the importance of wearing a waist covering in formalwear?

Black tie optional. What’s appropriate? What’s bit out of the ordinary and going to make a statement?

      On the docket!

Hi Brian! This sounds like an awesome topic, so here are my two cents for topics to consider:
    1) day events formal attire vs night events formal attire, mostly on the line of colors and fabrics.
    2) A while ago you made a posting about the “Creative Cocktail Attire” (loved that jacket btw!). Could a formal attire be transformed into a “creative cocktail” one?

    Looking forward to it!
