Casual Friday

There’s nothing more basic or essential to a man’s wardrobe than a great pair of jeans. What is the most essential pair you could have? Easy: slim dark denim. Dress them up, dress them down. They look great either way and even better when they’ve been worn in. I’ve had my A.P.C.s for five years now and they’re just finally coming into their own. But once you’ve checked that box, what’s next? While I love my white and black denim, the other essential pair of jeans a man should own is a well-fitted pair of faded denim. Here’s why.

Faded - He Spoke Style

Think about faded denim as the warm-weather equivalent of your perfect pair of slim dark denim. Spring is always a time for lighter and brighter and jeans are no exception. You can easily wear them casually with a sweatshirt and killer pair of white kicks, or throw on a sport shirt and navy blazer for an easy casual Friday outfit.

As with any pair of jeans, keep them slim—but not tight—and tapered. If you’re a fan of thrifting, this is a great opportunity to find an amazingly worn in pair. If the fit isn’t perfect, bring them to your tailor. My tailor actually got his start in the business altering his own jeans when he was in high school!

Personally, I’ve never had much luck at thrift stores. At 5′ 9″, 140lbs, and 36″ chest, it’s usually fairly slim pickings. But fortunately I’ve found a few brands that fit me extremely well. If you’re a similar build, my pick—and what I’m wearing—is the J.Crew 484 fit.

What an inspired look. Huge fans of the bag and think the personality of the shirt offers great individualism. We happen to think that this is quite Italian inspired too. The shirts referenced in this article might be of interest to you and are certainly stylish casual friday appropriate! http://bit.ly/1jcHmuQ

I’ve just got a brand new pair of denim actually, by a British brand called Albam. Raw, slim and made in England. They’re super stiff right now but hoping for great results in a few months.

Awesome. Let me know how they break in!

Do you have an alternative to the blazer? They don’t have it in my size :(

Adam, since I don’t know your size, if you’d like to stay with something from Reiss, I’d give this one or this one a try. Also, this option from Brooks Brothers is a great casual, but smart, piece.

Brian, Thanks! 40R usually. Thanks for the options. I really appreciate it.

Back in high school, my friend wore the same pair of jeans daily for a month without washing them. Our art teacher teased him that all of his gas was still in the fabric and they must really stink. Those jeans must’ve really been broken in by the end of the month!

Bwahahaha! That guy was either breaking in a pair of selvedge denim or doing some sort of performance art piece…
