When the word ‘black’ is placed in front of a day of the week, it has historically been to denote something terrible or catastrophic happening, such as a stock market selloff or subsequent crash. Though we now think of Black Friday as being positive for the great deals on offer, the term was first used in the early 1960s by police in Philadelphia because of the terrible traffic they’d have to manage as holiday shoppers rushed out in droves the day after Thanksgiving. Unhappy with the connotation, retailers eventually spun the term to mean that it was the day their books went from red to black. Talk about a rebrand.
