Cigar Review: La Aroma de Cuba Mi Amor Belicoso

August 24th, 2017
A

An excellent quality “anytime” smoke

Rolled in the My Father factory in Estelí for Ashton Distributors, the La Aroma de Cuba Mi Amor was a standout when it was released and earned the mark of No. 2 Cigar of the Year by Cigar Aficionado in 2011. This was the first time that Ashton Distributors used a Mexican wrapper on a cigar and the result was nothing short of extraordinary. Beautifully box-pressed and silky smooth, this cigar receives the highest of marks in my book.

Part 2: Analysis

Jumping right into the first third and I’m immediately met with a sharp woodiness and nuttiness. The wood is more on the cedar side, sharp and aromatic. On the finish is a bit of black pepper that is barely noticeable until the second third.

As I continue through the cigar, I notice a sharp contrast between the first and second third – the first being on the lighter side whereas the second third is filled with darker flavors such as earth, chocolate and more black pepper.

This is quite the contrast and makes for a very interesting smoking experience. As the second third begins to wane the final third comes to the fore with notes of espresso and dark chocolate with a little zing of spice on the finish. Reading about smoking this cigar does not do it justice, this is one you actually have to experience for yourself!

Construction, flawless. No touch-up or relight needed and a razor sharp burn all the way until the end. Like most belicosos, the tendency is for the pointed head to open up as the cigar begins to heat up. This cigar was no different and performed like a champ.

Boldness: 4/5 | Strength: 3.75/5

This cigar takes roughly 60-70 minutes to smoke and is what I would consider an “anytime” smoke as it is mild in strength and relatively cheap in price for the quality. To complement this stick I would match the body – maybe a Blue Moon on a hot summer day.

This cigar is a wonderful choice for a beginner to intermediate smoker as the flavors are easily discernible and the strength is on the lighter side.

Part 3: Verdict

Overall, I would give this cigar a 9.5/10. I have smoked this cigar on numerous occasions before and without a doubt, it is a cigar I recommend to close friends and give as gifts. The best part about this cigar is that it appeals to all cigar smokers, veterans and novices alike, and is absolutely worth the purchase of a few boxes.
